Default Alternator problem

I have a new 180AMP alternator on my LM7 (5.3) tahoe engine. The problem is that the alternator starts to charge only when the revs reach 1200rpm. The motor is on an offroad only vehicle which runs much on idle.

Any ideas which alternator (brand, type etc.) would charge stronger right from the idle and up?

Is the exciter wire connected? It's a tiny red wire that should plug in from the top. Are you using this on an LS1/f-car pulley setup?

what blur said....check the small wire and also all the other connections. If that does not help things, you can also get an overdrive pulley for the alternator.

Where can I get the alternator overdrive pulley?

Yes, the exciter wire is in place and functional. If it were not there wouldn´t it charge at all??
