Its probably the infamous piston slap that these cars have especialy when it is cold outside. I wouldnt sweat it too much since the slap goes away one the engine gets warm and the parts expand.

My car has had the piston slap noise since the first oil change (bought it at 22,000 miles). It had the lifters changed under warranty, I had it in so many times they extended my engine warranty for I forgot how much longer.
Had belts, pullies, tensioners changed too. Nothing fixed the problem, still does it today, not better not worse. It's been down the track a few times and revved to 6000 a lot. Now it has 37,000 on it so I guess I'm not going to worry. Have a listen, this is back around 26,000 miles

Sounds exactly like mine has since brand new. Dealer wanted to replace the pistons per Preliminary Service Bulletin 00150 back in '02.
I told them I didn't want their mechanic to tear my brand new engine apart.
Denied.
Still makes the noise. I have 31K miles on it and a 50K, 7 year warranty. Warranty will last until the '09's come out. I use Mobil 1 5w30.

By the way, this car has had P0410 code once and they replaced 1997272 solenoid. That's it except for both front RL/turn indicator lights have burned out which I replaced.

Otherwise the car has been perfect. I haven't even replaced the tires, battery, windshield wiper blades, etc, na-da yet.
It is at the dealer's body shop right now getting the sail panel repaired for paint bubbles, Service Bulletin 03-08-98-001A.

I have it bad also. I just let it warm up some before I drive it and measure my drain oil to check for consumption, other than that I beat the **** out of it

i bet you it'd be that loud if you made a recording from under the car. i have a 99 with 36,000 on it that sounds just like that in sub 40 degree temperatures on startup.

Yeah, just piston slap. Probably scoring the walls and blow up in another 2K or so miles.

J/K!!!

My friend had a 60K mile LS1 in his 3rd gen IROC and it slapped HELLA BAD! When he pulled the heads to do a head/cam swap the cylinder walls looked PERFECT and still had the hash marks ect. Not a bit of scoring. Don't sweat it, I don't think of it as piston slap as much as I think of it as my motor mocking the way a 4.6's knees knock when I get around them.
