Default Cutouts?

so what exactly do cut outs do beside make the car a bit louder?

Supposed to free up horsepower by bypassing the muffler.

More power...depending on how restrictive the rest of your exhaust system is and where you put the cutout.

ok so how much do they cost, i dont have headers yet and are they worth getting if im getting headers, where should i mounth them?

A cut-out is normally going to give you 5-10 HP and a really loud exhaust tone as it is bypassing the muffler, if your going to do it I would recommend an electric cut-out so you will be able to easily control how loud your exhaust is. Also there are a few different locations to place them with the majority of cut-out owners putting it on the i-pipe if I recall correctly. Do a cut-out search and you might pull up all the locations as I'm not entirely familiar with them all.

Some people like them some don't, it's all a matter of preference. I have a cutout in my stock exhaut and I love it. Also with all I have heard through sound clips and word of mouth, a cutout sounds great with headers and an aftermarket Y. Check for some sound clips on www.ls1sounds.com I would also recommend an electric cutout, so easy to control.

Well if you want an electric cutout, you will prolly pay 150-180 or so for a new one. I picked my DMH up on E-bay for 130, brand new. I would recommend lookin around for somethin like that or a quality used one, DMH also offers a 4yr free replacement warranty. Just a manual cutout will run you 30 bucks or so, then plus install. ok, well that sounds good im going to buy it in a couple days here, hard to install by yourself?... and for these types of exhaust im guessing its just a single cutout right?

Well, it needs to be welded more than likely so unless you can weld it in you need to take it to a shop. and yes just one cutout, in my opinion in the I-pipe, right under the rear pass. seat. As far as the elec. cutout install goes, it is fairly easy, I wired mine up through my cig lighter.

ok, i just talked to my buddy and he said sence i have no cats im prob going to lose horse sence i will have NO back pressure

You will be fine if you have a stock exhaust sytstem. If you had long tubes and 3in y-pipe into a 4in I pipe with no cats on a stock motor then you would have no backpressure. With a stock exausht minus the cats with a cutout you will be fine.

Yeah, the ideal is a quiet cat-back, like stock, and then the cutout. Then you have the best of both worlds. If you're looking for a bargain, just have the manual cutout welded onto your I pipe, and then when you have the cash, you can upgrade to an electric.

I have long tubes, into 3" off road y, into 3" I. My cutout is right before the I pipe goes over the axle. I gained about 7hp on the dyno with the cutout open vs closed.

I wonder if there would be a big difference between dumping it before the axle, and after the axle right before the muffler. I looked at the writeup on that today, and the one right before the muffler looked pretty nice, I like the thought of having it exit near the rear of the car too, as opposed to right in the middle.

I got my cutout installed today, and I love it! It was installed right under the rear passenger seat on the I-pipe, there's an indent in the floorboard that looks like it was made for it.

Using the *** dyno I felt a little loss down low, but when the car gets up in rpm it feels (and definitely sounds) a bit stronger.

Plus the burbling on decel is AWESOME
