Exhaust drone and rasp difference

Exhaust rasp I have heard exhaust rasp is caused by unequal length y-pipes but I am not sure if that is what causes the crackling sound out the exhaust when letting off the gas pedal.It is more noticiable with some cat-backs but not others.
