Default Detonating!

Its been a while since I've had this problem, and its come back again, im assuming because its getting warmer. The T/a's detonating a ton past 4500 and is still consistant with only doing it on the warmer parts of the days. Hasnt done it most of the winter and only does it now on particularly hot days. Im curious, with such a small change in temperture needed to stop it, would a 160 thermo cure this problem? TIA

I would say a 160 thermo would help and get your fans tuned to come on at a lower temp.

Do you still have your stock thermostat?

first off, like luna said, are you running 91+ octane? if you're not, you deserve every bit of detonation you can possibly get. if you are running 91+ octane, try seafoaming your top end. when carbon builds up in your motor, it can cause higher internal pressures and lower efficiencies, leading to detonation. a full seafoam treatment - possibly two if your top end is very dirty - can substantially lower your detonation, if not completey get rid of it. if that doesn't work, you can try the 160* thermostat, but that actually lowers your engine's effiencies as today's engines are designed to operate at higher temperatures. a low-temp thermostat can lead to lower fuel economy and lowers oil performance as oil detergents are designed to work best at around 210*-215*. i would advise against the 160* thermostat unless it's a pure strip car. if it's a daily driver, the stock 186* thermostat suits you much better.

again, i recommend you seafoam your car. it won't cost you more than $12 to do a full treatment. it's worth every penny.
