01-02 Timing being low.. What about reprograming?
K&N
Direct flow lid
GMAF
MAFT
BBK
AIT
Hooker muffler
88-.90 on the O2’s
65* outside
192* coolant temp
My understanding is the 01-02 have some different parts that may have resulted in the factory reducing the amount of timing we see for pollution levels.. The differences the 01-02 have the:
Truck cam
LS6 intake
Larger injectors (98’s had them too)
Exhaust manifolds (00 had them I think)
With these different parts and less timing the 01-02 seem to have a little better dyno numbers and track times on the average.
I’m wondering if anyone has tried to reprogram the PCM with the stock cam and boltons to see a gain? I know most people would not got through the trouble of re-programing unless a cam was installed. If the majority of the 01-02’s are only seeing 23* timing with boltons, I would guess that there is room for improvement if we could get the timing up to say 27-29* like the 98-00 cars.
Couple questions I have..
1) What do you see in your 01-02 for timing?
2) Is there a good posibility of seeing a gain with just brining the timing tables up at WOT? If so what type of gain?
3) Would there be any disadvantage of brining the timing up? (I run N20 as well and understand the problems of too much timing)

The cam we have has a lot to do with why we need less timing.

There is a point of diminishing returns with timing. More is better but only to a point. People tend to get "timing crazy" and think that they need as much as possible. FWIW, I have Ed Wright's custom tuning, and my max timing is right at 25.5 degrees. I wouldn't worry with trying 27-28 degrees of timing until you swap cams out. It may very well show a gain then.
