Default How to check charging system?

I possibly have an alternator problem. It's fairly new, but doesn't fit just right. It's a cheap one from Car Quest. I don't know I must have been drinking when I bought it. It ran fine for over a year. Now when I jump start the car it runs for 1min and car dies. Voltage is in the red. So I'm pretty sure it is not charging. Anyway how to test whether it's charging? Not whether it works, I'm pretty sure it works. Just if it's charging the battery. What would I do to check?

to see if it's charging start the car(if it'll start) put a voltage meter on the battery if it reads 14.XX it is charging, if it's only in the 12.XX it is not charging

turn on the headlights and rear defroster, it should still be atleast high 13.XX
