Default Remove EGR on 2000 TA?

I want to get Grotyhann headers, but noone has them for the 2000 trans ams because of the EGR. How do I remove the EGR so I can just buy non EGR headers. Also, where do I get the parts I need.

Easy to do. Pull the junk off and save some weight. You might as well remove your AIR & air pump while you're at it. You will have to get or make some simple plates to cove the holes. After that your SES light will show up but a PCM programming to delete those codes will take care of it.

I don't know what the emissions testing is like in PA, but here in Washington and in many other states we will soon be seeing (or already have)the IM240 OBD-II testing. As I understand it this test will use a scanner to check for failed OBD-II tests (e.g. EGR) through your ALDL port. Having your EGR removed should fail the check even if you have the code deleted with programming. I think it's Team ZR-1 that has a great deal of good info on this test.

This is why I opted to just go with the 98-99 headers and retrofit the AIR/EGR fittings to the older design. It'll cost you and extra $130-$160 to get the GM parts (one each of # 12556643, 12559189, and 12559188) or you can just modify your piping to work. This is the same procedure that you'd have to go through with FLP's or MAC's.

I'd give Angie at Thunder Racing a call - they should have everything you need. I think they may still have a set of the 98-99 Grots as well.

Good luck.

What are the performance advantages/disadvantages of having or not having egr? Would I do better to have the egr removed and run 2001 headers as far as performance? Also, why would i fail the test by removing my egr and getting it reprogrammed but then a 2001 without egr could pass?

More on the OBD-II testing:

I'm not aware of any performance advantages/disadvantages by having or not having EGR. Maybe others can elaborate.
