How does an inline fuel pump work?

I have a Walbro in tank, but let's assume I have a stock one. There are inline fuel pumps that flow alot of fuel. How do they do that when the weakest link in the flow is still there? Do they overwork the stock pump? Wouldn't the stock pump still flow the same? Someone explaing.

Most inline pumps are "pusher" style.. like a T-rex. It's made to mantain the fuel pressure between the installed pump and the rails.

the inline pump takes a load off of the main pump, and together they work better/faster like drafting in nascar.
