It's definitely got some gain, but the load on the pump is minimal when you're running in a straight line.
I would avoid unless you're looking to eeek out the last hundredths. I do it 50% of the time. The others I get lazy.
If you're running 8.1s and haven't already did the following, I'd do it:
remove back seat
run with low gas (less than a 1/4)
remove or at least disconnect the front swaybar
take any junk/tool boxes, jack and spare out of the car
air up front tires really high
short belt has consistently shown to drop .03 or so in the 1/4, so not much in the 1/8th at all. At the same time, it would suck to run 8.00 or 8.01

Once you run the belt under the water pump pulley and then go up over the small pulley, you'll go straight down to the alternator.

There's a small correction. I do not go over the small pulley; I go under it. It won't be used at all. I installed my short belt yesterday for the track, so it's now fresh in my mind. I agree that the faster you go the more stable the car will feel at the end of the track w/ no power steering.
I went 11.73 in not the best weather.. so it looks like I might have picked up a little too
