5w 40 is a thicker oil.....gm recommends 5w30 but it all depends on your driving habits and conditions.....i wouldnt go with 10w50 thats very thick and if your hearing noise and having to use that you might have internal issues....

Thicker oil is not the way to calm anything down. I don't know why everyone thinks that this is the way to fix ticking/clicking. Think about it this way:

If you take some hair gel and dump it down the drain what does it do? It clogs up here and there. Take some water and pour it down the drain....it makes it all the way down. It is not that drastic of the change, but that is the same principle behind what I am getting at.

After that being said. If you run a thinner weight it will get into those small tolerance areas a whole lot easier. IE: your lifters and upper drivetrain. That is where most of that noise is going to be generated at. If it is something down in the bottom end it could be an issue beyond oil choice.

I always found with OHC engines that high moly content in the oil quieted the valvetrain. Several times I would change oil, and have a noisey valvetrain. I would pour in some MoDTC additive, and the noise would go away. I then changed to Redline 10W-30, which has a ton of moly, and the valvetrain is especially quiet.

I don't know if the same will work for a pushrod engine, but this has been my best observation so far.

Rather than use a thicker oil like said above find a oil that works for your engine. I use RP 10W40- don't use a drop of oil, and have good oil pressure. I used mobile 1 5W30 and I lost a ton of oil and the car didn't like it. I also have over 100,xxx on mine.

Go with a quality oil and if that doesn't solve it then you have other problems.
