Default SLP vs. FLP

SLP LT ups: 3" y-pipe
SLP LT downs: non-removable cats, non-coated y-pipe.

FLP LT ups: removable cats, coated y-pipe
FLP LT downs: 2.5" y-pipe

What hp/tq gains have you gotten from your personal setups. Any regrets for getting one and not getting the other? They are basically the same price so now all I have to do is choose one. So I guess the question I'm trying to ask is which one is better?

My car---2000 Z28 M6 w/ minor mods: Borla, Whisper lid, Hurst shifter, SLP ram air kit

I just installed my FLP's today. Just gotta say that I love the option of running ORP's one day and cats the next. Unless youre running big cubes, your car wont run different with a 2.5" Y pipe over a 3".

Take it for what it's worth: I had SLP LT's on my 2001 SS & they were a pain in the a$$ to install, scraped all the time (car was lowered), & I gained 10rwhp with them. I got rid of them & installed FLP LT's & they took 3 hours to install including plug change, never scraped, & I gained 21rwhp. Every other mod, air/fuel, dyno, etc etc was the same. I am totally anti-SLP & all for FLP's; you can see why....

I gained a solid 2.5 tenths and 2.5 mph in the 1/4 with just SLP LT's. As far as the install in concerned, it took me longer to remove the old stuff than to install the LT's. My secret on the install was to let the tranny hang after dropping the cross member and have a friend push to the opposite side you want to install.

i had good results and the flps have never scraped once, even with my front end pretty damn low.

dont get too excited about the coating on the Y-pipe though <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> it will be a nice rustic orange color before you know it <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I have SLP's, I don't scrape but my car is not lower. I do switch from cats to ORP ALL the time for me its not a problem. It all depends on what you call hard. I just loosen all from the headers back wiggle the y-pipe and pull the cats off. Its not a walk in the park but its not hard. S.O.T.P. feel was a gain in low end torque. I have read of the coating on the FLPs being of bad quality and rusting fast. My SLPs are in good shape after about three years.

I'm not a big fan of SLP's "spaghetti" headers either. I gained 20 RWHP at peak with the FLP setup w/ stock internals, and my average HP and TQ was up considerably throughout the powerband.

I have the beautiful rustic orange going BUT changing out the cats and ORP's is smooth and flawless for me now. Use aluminum tape to seal them at the clamp location and you're all set. Allow 1/2 hour of driving with smoke billowing out as the oils are burned off the tape residue from your now straight pipes.

Myself, I have a set of SLP's going in soon, but if I were to buy a set of headers now, I'd go for the FLP's.

Since I already have the SLP's, though, I haven't seen enough hard evidence that the FLP's are all THAT superior to make me want to sell my current headers.

I am very satisfied with the SLP headers... only real thing that threw a curve was running the starter wire t oa new location... it kept getting hot so I just ran a new one anyways. The headers were pretty simple to install (im used to Mac header installs so anything is easy compared to those). Power is very noticable from 2000-3500 rpm as well as top end from 70 mph to 120 mph. I havent been to the track yet but before the headers I couldnt break my tires loose in a straight line without dumping the clutch... now all I do is hit it at 3000 rpm and they go up in smoke... must say the exhaust note sounds similar to a corvette now also, very exotic sounding both through the cutout and through the factory SLP center mount.

I have the SLP headers and they were fairly easy to install thanks to my buddies lift <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> as far as power gains between the two I have no clue but I made some decent dyno numbers with them <img border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" title="" src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" />

Anyone have any dyno differences between using the SLP LTs with SLP Y-Pipe & Random Tech cats vs SLP Lts with SLP Y-Pipe with offroad pipes?

Thanks,
Chris

The cats seem to flow VERY well, not to mention they are 3 inch cats... I get consistent lean codes in the rear O2s though since the install, however I am aiming the problem at the O2 sensors and not the headers...

SLP is a quality product and they do hang a bit
low.. if you lower more than 1 inch then go
with flp's
The gains are great and complement my hotcam very
well.. 330/330 hotcam+lid+catback
added slp kit and now 351/364

I solved the scrape issue by having a local shop weld on skid plates... fixed it, just have to live with the gut wrenching noise, but I feel better knowing it isnt hurting anything!

My God this subject has been beat to death since the LT headers started to come out Nov/Dec of 2000. Both FLP and SLP have their goods and bads.

I have had my SLP's since December 2000. No rust. The Y-pipe is like new. Does it hang low, yes. Do I care No. I have learned to drive the car, not smash it up.

Do the FLP since smack the floor boards?

Install time is all depends on the skill of the installer.

With a couple of other mods, I saw a 1.2 second drop in the 1/4 with my SLP LT.

Last time I saw a SLP LT GP you can get them for about $800. FLP's aren't they still around $1500?

Good luck in your decision.

David
