Default Oil pressure sending unit

I've been having problems with my autometer sending units for oil pressure. The first time my gauge went to zero I pulled the sending unit off and it was plugged with a small piece of paper or maybe thread tape. I put it back together and it worked fine for a week or so, then quit again. So I pulled it back off and it wasn't plugged or anything. I bought a new sending unit put it on and the gauge worked fine for another couple weeks and has now quit working again. I still have the factory warning light for oil pressure so I'm safe, but I really want to get this gauge figured out. It is an electronic sending unit.

Is this a common problem with these? Any ideas what's going on here?

Thanks!

I guess I'll just have to try my luck with another sending unit.
