Default surface discharge plugs

Has anyone ever used what is called a surface discharge plug? It is basically a plug that does not have a ground strap on it. I am finding them more and more in the outboard 4 stoke motors I see at work. One of the local shops that runs a N02 drag boat also uses these on his out board and really like them.

Many of the new plugs use a simular technology.

so do you know the reasoning behind getting rid of the ground strap? I can see where it would be good to not lose it in the motor. If anyone finds anything on this give me a link as I would like to read more on it.
