My brother just bought an SLP UD Pulley for his 98 Trans Am and we got the old balancer off but we can't find an installer to put the UD Pulley on with. I was just wondering if anyone knows what i need to do to get the damn UD Pulley back on his car. ( Forgot to mention no Hardware store sells a longer bolt with the same thread size to put it on with...) And part stores don't know what the hell to give me, i've tried all kinds of ****. PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks in advance for any advice Also if you could include part #'s or where to get the install tool at that would help.

Yes get the install too. The idea here is to "PUSH" the pulley on, and not pull it on to the snout of the crank. If you pull it on, you run the risk of damaging the threads...

 

I still have no clue as far as where to get the bolt to do the install with. I can't find a bolt anywhere at all. Any suggestions? Or if anyone lives in Indianapolis He'll pay for the help or to use the tool. We need it done tomorrow or we may end up having to take it to the dealer and that sucks. They want like $100 - $200 to install the new pulley.

See if they can overnight it to ya. When your done, sell it on the board and make some of your cash back.

 

I got my pulley started with a block of wood and and BFH hammer. Just put a piece of wood across the front of the pulley and tap the pulley until it starts. You will NOT damage the pulley and it will eventually start. then you can just use your stock bolt to seat it all the way. Pull the stock bolt out and put in your NEW crank bolt and torque it down.

ive put on a few pulleys by using a longer bolt but be careful. i have heard several horror stories about bolts being broken off in cranks and stripped threads.

 

Thats what I did with my powerbond UD pulley I got from TSP...

 

Holy **** DO NOT use a longer bolt... I had one break off in my crank earlier this week, and then had an easy out break off in the bolt. LUCKILY the engine was out of the car, but the only place that could get it out was a place that did EDM and it cost me $220 to get it fixed. Use the right tool, or don't do it, its not worth the risk. Please learn from my mistake.

 

thanks for the input everyone, I'm probably gonna get the tool from 618hawk. The tool he makes looks very solid and well put together, so if I need anymore help I'll let evryone know. can the pulley be removed with the radiator in place?

 

Hard to do with out taking it out.........here is a good writeup of a cam change howto, removing and reinstalling the harmonic balancer is part of it.

Miike 94z, you did not use the correct bolt. It MUST be a Grade 8 hardened bolt, and you Must get the pulley started straight.
