Default running cooler question

ok i had asked earlier about the best way to run cooler since we all know how hot chevy set these stupid cars. I was talking to my mechanic about putting a 160 stat in my 98 camaro and having the car reprogrammed to have the fans kick on lower too. he said that it was a bad idea cause our the computer swicthes to an open loop running system when the car reaches operating temp. so if i lowered it some things would run different or wouldnt work right. does anyone know if this is true and if it is what is the best way to fix the problem and get this thing cooler. thanks guys

160 deg no whre near cold enough for the car to not switch to closed loop. If I remember correctly the stock tune on my 01 switches to CL above 92*F. regardless I have a 160 deg thermostat and have my fans set to go on around 185 deg and do all my tuning with HPT and it has caused no ill effects. The only way I can see a car being soo cold it never goes to closed loop is if the thermostat was stuck open or decided not to run a thermostat.
