Default Catalytic converter

I have a Firebird, and I seem to be having problems with the cat. A friend told me they could take it out and put in a straight pipe. Would that be a bad thing to do? What would the effects be?

Doing a cat delete can net different results. You'll have to get an 02 sim, or tune out the code. Plus you'll run the risk of failing emissions if your state does that.

There is a factory recall on late model year Firebird/Trans Ams CATs up to 100k miles, and you don't need to be the original owner. Depends on the year, I got a letter around here somewhere. Do a search and you could just get it fixed, if you want to keep the CATs. Otherwise you will need to deal with the O2's as stated above.

Cut the cats off and put a straight pipe up or an ORY with a tune.

You can just gut out the cats, so if you have the visual inspections, it looks like you still have them. but if you have the sniffers, you need to keep them.

Oh yea this gets asked alot. You can throw out the cats for. The sort of converter you want to install next is based on the budget. If you go for a less expensive model, such as the magnaflow ones on ebay, you'd drop down a few hp. Alternatively, if you spring for the more expensive metallic spun converters, you'd garner back a percentage of cfm. More importantly you won't be driving around with a chance of getting a ticket. The MS is obviously more than nominal, hence your wallet size determines the direction you go.
