Default Headers installed, but rpm's at 3k in Neutral??

I just got done installing my headers and full exhaust tonight. Whenever I was leaving the shopit felt fine, but then a little bit later whenever i floored it in first it had some hesitation to it. Then whenever I went to put it in Neutral and slow down, the rpm's shot up to 3k and held. I turned the car off and then drove again and it drove perfectly fine, and did so for the next 30 minutes until I got home.

As the car sits right now, the EGR and AIR Systems ('99) have been unplugged and removed. There are no Cats and no Rear o2's.

Was this problem because the rear o2's have been taken out? I plan to have the rear o2's deleted along with EGR and AIR systmes ASAP.

You might be thinking that the rear o2's are the front. I would make sure that you have the front ones in the right place. Most of the time funny behavior like that after exhaust work is the culprit.

I know for a fact that we put the right o2's in there. I checked that i think two or three times just to make sure because I've read that people have done that. The rear o2's were just hanging down near the rear of the transmission and we zip-tied those up.

I pulled all the EGR equip. and blocked off the plate on the intake manifold. That doesn't leak up top, i checked that first. I also pulled all the AIR lines and my headers didn't come with the AIR or EGR provisions, so i shouldn't have a vacuum leak right? Unless there is a hose i'm not thinking of. I pulled the AIR relay and will remove the pump later today.

I haven't deleted the codes yet, i'm looking for someone who cane tune them out for me here locally in college station. I don't have time to make the drive to houston. Thanks for all the help

Definitely sounds like a vacuum leak to me, or maybe even a serious exhaust leak. Make sure everything's plugged up really well where the AIR and EGR systems have been removed. Also, make sure your header gaskets aren't leaking, and if you have emissions fittings, make sure none blew off.

rear o2's have nothing to do with engine management.

+1 for vacuum leak

Thanks for the help. Now that I think about it I think I left that one AIR line unplugged, the one that most people put a screw or a bolt into. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, did some research on the rear o2's and their sole purpose is to make sure the cats are working fine. After inspecting my engine bay I couldn't find that hose that people usually screwed a bolt into in the rear of the intake. So I tightened down my EGR plug and i think that did it. Car runs great now. Thanks for all the help.

your not going to have the air line to plug with a screw because you hava a 99. that AIR system didnt start till 2000 or 2001. my guess is you had the battery un hooked and it took shutting the car off and starting it again for the PCM to learn an idle again. i know when i un hook my battery, it idles fine untill i give it gas then it wont come down from 3k RPM or so untill i shut it off and start it again. i wouldnt worry about it unless it happens again or you infact know you have a vaccum/exhaust leak.

Ah, didn't see you had a '99. The AIR system was revised on 2000, I believe, to incorporate that extra vacuum tube. No surprise it was something leaking from the EGR removal. So often it's the smallest things that give us the biggest problems.
