from what I can see in the pics, it looks like it wasn't torqued down to spec's.

it happened to me on my 96 TA. The housing around the bendix(i think thats what its called) gear broke off and it was bouncing around by the flywheel.

My car would still start, but it would make a horrible noise since the housing was hitting the flywheel...

Take it back to the parts store and say it was defective...thats what I did...
