Question Which knock sensor to get for a 1998 SS?

Hello gentlemen,

I am throwing a code for bad knock sensor in my 1998 SS. I have decided to replace both of them.

I am showing 10456222 as the correct part number for my car (includes locating tab).

However, there is also 10456603. Supposedly this is a 1998+ sensor with no locating tab. I did a search and some people have either/or.

Is there any reason I should buy one part number over the other? Will they both connect to the wiring harness and fit in the knock sensor hole just the same?

Seems the latter part # that I listed - 10456603 - has been updated and may have improvements. Plus, it's cheaper. Should I just buy this one? Assuming it will plug in and work of course.

Thanks,
Dope

I have always heard to get the 10456603 its the updated one that works.

On another note. I thought that if you ordered it from GM they get you the updated one. just like the oil pump. that they really dont list the old one.

So I need a new harness for the new sensors? Anyone have the harness part number? I assume this is the harness that plugs into the 2 sensors and then extends to the back of the valley area? Or is it a larger harness?

You'll want the updated knock sensors and the harness. The new sensors have a different plug on top, and the "harness" is only about 2' long, attaches to the main harness right behind the manifold.

Knock sensors - 12589867 (you'll need 2)

Harness - 12601822

It may also be a good time to replace the intake manifold seals. I'd recommend these.....

They are cheap and will work on a stock manifold better than a factory set (they are thicker). Expect to pay $75 for seals from a dealershit. You don't HAVE to buy these, but seals that have been on for a while flatten out badly and don't work well. I just pulled my neighbors '02 'vette manifold and his were just barely at the "ok to put back on" level.

Hmmm worth a shot. My car is a 98 with about 100k miles and I'd hate to have intake manifold seal problems after the install.

Thanks for the help guys.
