Default Yet another slow factory tach thread.. Can we mod it?

I got a 99 m6 LS1 and it is a real sleeper. I would like to keep it that way too. I've had just about had enough of the factory tach. Is there a mod out there to increase it's response? I really don't want a aftermarket tach.

There has got to be a way to get a accurate tach while keeping the stock look.

Any ideas?

no, unfortunately i have never heard of a way to make it faster. what you can do is get a shift light and hide it in your a/c vent so you can't even see it until it flashes. a lot of ppl do that to keep the sleeper look.

I agree with the above...I've never heard of a fix for our slow tach. I just installed a shift light in my A/C vent, and that has worked fine for years for me. Plus, I'm so used to the sound at this point that I don't even need to watch the tach anymore to know where to shift.

There has got to be a way. I wonder if there something holding it back on the tach itself. Kinda like a damper. Or is it a pulse/voltage issue?

I will be looking into this.

I'm pretty sure I saw the reason on this site.

I do agree with the shift light though.

There is some sort of electronic dampner in the tach to make it appear to be a "smooth operation". If it wasnt there, it would bounce a lil like the autometers do on a big cammed car type deal....GM decided to make it appear smoother, than give a accurate reading... you know..b/c who uses a tach anyway?.... lmao

you can go into hp tuners or something like that and get the accurate reading... Then you can pull the tach needle and re adjust it till it is correct i might be wrong though

Accuracy really isnt the issue... its the speed of the needle movement. My truck suffers from the same thing, I put an autometer in it with shift light and solved it though... no more guessing where the motor's at...

i sit with the steering wheel as low as it can go where it almost rubs on my knees. I cant see the tach or speedo because the top of the wheel blocks it so I really rely on my ears to shift. I think a shift light would be the best option b/c i dont want some monster tach on the dash. it might compromise my identity in the future...

All LS1 tachs BLOW. I tried to stay away from the aftermarket tach set up but I gave in. I needed a accurate tach that read higher then the factory tach due to my mods. After installing it, it makes the stock tach seem even slower. At lower revs the stock tack lags a good 1000-1500 RPM behind. I actually like the look of my Autometer white faced tach now. And I get props on it alll the time....

You can kinda see it in this pic.
