EGR...keep/not to keep?

EGR...keep/not to keep?
Okay I have been reading many misconceptions of the EGR system. Why to keep it. Why not to keep it. What it does, Etc.
So I have come up with some questions...
1. What is the exact function of this system?
2. Is there any reason to get rid of my EGR system? If so, why? I can turn it off with EDIT.
3. Why did GM stop using EGR on some vehicles after '01 model year?
4. If I keep mine, should I just put a restrictor in the tube to limit exhaust back flow and hack down that tube that goes inside the intake?
5. Does removal of the EGR system negatively effect performane or fuel economy?
Hopefully this is in the correct forum... Thanks!

Re: EGR...keep/not to keep?
1.recycles a small amount of exhaust gas back into the intake.
2.if you want to get an LS6 intake, then you might wanna of get rid it.
3.oversized intake allows some air to "leak" back.
4.no, you might through a code.
5.no.
hope that helps

Re: EGR...keep/not to keep?
EGR stand for exhuast gas recirculation, and as mentioned above it recirculates some exhaust gas back into your intake. Some cars needed it because depending on what gas they used, the engine would detonate (make a ping noise.) On some of the newer cars, they just didnt detonate. EGR is emmissions related, therefore it is BS. Take it off, screw air team. By the way, it will have a small impact on your fuel economy, but if you do a cam, that wont matter. Hope that helps.
