Default Need Help with ASP pulley

I went racing the weekend and met with disaster. I have had my ASP Pulley on for about 6 months now with no problems. On my first N2O run the car left good pulling a 1.51 60' and was pulling strong all the way to just before the 1/8th mile. Then it bogged hard and poped once so I shut it down and started to hear a banging noise. When I got back to the pits I noticed that My pulley had decided to part from my car but not before poking a hole in my oil pan and denting the entire underside of the car. Has anyone else had problems with their ASP pulley just coming off? I have thought of every possible explanation and have had no luck finding a problem. Any responses are very much appreciated!!

BTW- Even though I shut it down at the 1/8th mile I still managed to pull a 11.02@109. That could have been one helluva run!

Did you use a brand new stock bolt? Did you tighten it down with the old bolt first and then remove that bolt and use a new one from GM?

How much did you torque it down?

Did the old bolt break or just back out?

I used a new bolt and followed the GM procedure of installation. torqued it down to 240 ft lbs., backed it out, torqued to 37 ft lbs., and then 120 degrees. This was all on a new bolt. The old bolt just spun out, No thread damage at all.

I thought it was 140 degrees past 37 ft. lbs.

It is 37ft-lb, then 140! Also, use RED LOC-TITE and let it dry overnight! I have been through this also, and it is a real pita!

It sounds like you torqued the new bolt to 240, then backed it out and retightened it. You are supposed to seat the pulley with the old bolt, then put in the new bolt to spec. This could have caused the problem.

BTW - New GM bolts already have red lock-tite on the threads.

Man, did you leave that pulley out on the track or the shut down. That would be very dangerous for the next guy in line behind you.

What BLKTA said is correct. You stretched the new bolt, and then basically reused it. Not good!

Drove up and down the track 4 times and could not find the pulley.

Well that pulley probably took off sideways into the weeds, I'm sure it was spinning at around 6500 rpm when it hit the pavement! Damn, sorry to hear this happened Firehawk, but I'm glad you posted this since I'm planning a pulley install soon.

Hey did the new bolt break or spin out? Have you looked into the end of the crank to see if a piece of it is still in there?

Use the CORRECT specs and your pulley wont go flying off either.

Like others said, you shouldn't have used the new bolt to tighten down to 240. You stretched the bolt and then used it again. It was no longer a new bolt when installed.

It spun out. I found it and the belt.

I am going to use an ARP bolt this time with the new pulley. I am also going to have the crank keyed to keep from spinning the pulley.

Smart move; I was just going to suggest the ARP bolt and maybe a better torque wrench.
