you dont HAVE to, but when you get a few good mods under your belt a tune always helps

My car was detonating above 4000 rpm after the ls6 intake. That's what the tuner said b4 he retuned it.

I have installed all my bolt ons and haven't gotten a tune yet, I am trying to wait until a cam install.

It runs a lil funny sometimes but no big deal...

I had a mail tune to get started for my conversion, I had the normal stuff flashed out and some basic tune for a stock engine.. I have since swapped on a LS6 intake and notice not change in normal engine operation and then a PP Throttle Body two month later.. I have not noticed any bad idle or syptoms while driving and don't think I need to get it retuned due to the two changes. But as everyone said, it can't hurt but would be better to get one, so after I do my winter project (headers and maybe a cam) I will get it dyno tuned.
