MAF Questions
I'm curious about aftermarket mass air meters. I know this is a popular mod, but I've read in High Performance Pontiac magazine that it is practically useless unless you have a very high horsepower engine. Since mine is essentially stock at this point I'm wondering if it's worth the money. Also the article in HPP said that if you do add a MAF it has to be calibrated. So my question is if I were to buy SLP's 85mm MAF (supposedly it is already calibrated) would I need to have the PCM tuned? What about Granitelli's? Any help is appreciated.

Re: MAF Questions
Also, before anyone answers, I forgot to ask about descreening the MAF. I know some of you have done this as well. Is this a good idea? Should the PCM be tuned if this is done?

Re: MAF Questions
Don't waste your money on an aftermarket MAF. The stock unit is more than up to the task. Unless you're putting down around 600hp. Pull the screen out and you're set, you won't need to do any tuning for this. Hope this helps.

Re: MAF Questions
That's pretty much what I thought. I don't proclaim to know more than GM's engineers so I don't want to do anything that may cause problems. I feel the same way about the free ram air mod. It just doesn't seem worth it to me.

Re: MAF Questions
Just descreen the stocker. No, it won't need tuning and no, it won't decrease drivablity. Folks have been doing this simple mod for years and years. Never heard of a problem with it. That screen was designed for the trucks that have a 90 degree turn just before the MAF. Same part number on the cars but they have a straight shot. Bottom line, it isn't needed.

Re: MAF Questions
Yeah, what the Colonel said. If I'm not mistaken, the ZO6's MAF come descreened from the factory. Can anyone clear this up?
TA WS6, I liked the Borla when I had the stock manifolds and cats, but it's quite raspy now. I'm going to get a bullet welded in to get rid of the rasp. Don't get me wrong, I still like it for the quality of manufacture and the looks but it's kind of like having a $600 cut out. It's REALLY loud with headers and no cats.

Re: MAF Questions
One of the first things I did to my car after I bought it (new) was remove the MAF screen (along with better lid & air filter). I've had no problems and I now have 13,200 miles on it. I first did this mod to a 87 Formula I had (5.0 TPI 5 speed) because I saw test results that showed it flowed something like 100-150 more CFM with the screen removed. I believe I saw this in the TPI Specialties Insider Hints Book (not sure). Anyway, I think it's a good mod and it's free!
I never had any problems with my 87 after the mod either. Just my thoughts...

Re: MAF Questions
I agree with most everyone else. Don't even touch the damn thing. If you must dick with it, only de-screen it. Some have seen up to 3hp with this. Which is not suprising. if you remove the screen, and smash it, it shows just how much of a restriction it can be.
Don't even think about porting the ends. I did it and now I'm going back to stock after getting trouble codes. Only get a new sensor when you are getting 450rwhp or more.

Re: MAF Questions
I've had my MAF ends ported and screen removed now for about 20,000 miles and have not had any problems whatsoever. The only thing wrong is that my car seems to have a bit more power, dammit, stupid increase in power!!!

Re: MAF Questions
I agree, descreen. But there are reported problems, and if I remember everyone that gripes about it has an 01-02. My 2000 has agreed w/ the simple mod.
And yes, the Z06 do not have a MAF, at least not the "calibrated" ones that PACE sells.

Re: MAF Questions
I have a pace vv the ls6 maf and love it. Along with my fipk the car pulls much harder and with less effort at all rpm's. With my stock maf and direct flow lid the car felt sluggish and slow.
