If the y-pipe is what is banging on acceleration, Mufflex makes a bracket for 3 inch y-pipes that eliminates the banging issues.

LS1 Y-Pipe "Bump Stop" Hanger

It's a well known fact that all LS1 Camaros and Firebirds cars have a "banging" issue when a set of long tube headers are installed. This banging causes the knock sensor to activate, causing a timing retard, taking away much needed horsepower under hard acceleration (usually at a drag strip when traction is ideal). This Mufflex hanger uses a rubber bumpstop that will not allow the Y-pipe to hit the underbody of the car causing this situation. The lower clamp and support rods are made out of stainless steel (tig welded for strength) and the upper rod is zinc coated steel.
Peace,
Craig.

before u buy the mufflex, check your k-member and see if it's got a shiny mark on it. then you'll know it's hitting there......if it is, just notch it slightly. u'll see what i'm talkin about.

Yeah, typically the banging you hear after a y-pipe install is the y-pipe hitting the underside of the floorboard on the driver's side.

On theK-member, you'll likely want to check right at where the lower control arms mount to the K-member. It may be necessary for you to loosen the header bolts and the Y-pipe, and slowly, gently, jack the rear of the collectors up, so that you are essentially pointing the collectors up toward the car. This will help pull the primaries off the K-member, if that's what they're hitting; just be careful as to not damage the headers and that you leave enough clearance for the Y-pipe on the driver's side and near the I-pipe merge.

Here is where it is rubbing...hits on both sides.... It is the back circular portion of the kmember where the lower control arm mounts to....How can I fix this?? Let me know if a better picture is needed and ill jack the car up and get under and take a few more....

You could either notch the stock k member or buy an aftermarket one. The aftermarket k members usually provide extra clearance for the headers.

I have the 1 3/4" ARH and I have no problems with rubbing or y pipe banging.

I am kinda surprised to see someone have an issue with an ARH.

I, too, am suprised. That image isn't too good in that it doesn't really shot where on the K-member it's hitting, however, I'd suggest taking either a Dremmel or Sawsall to those spots. I think I have an idea where those spots are, and with just a little notching, your problems should go away.

Are your motor mounts okay? Maybe they're wore out since both sides are rubbing.

If you get poly motor mounts do you need to replace the transmission mounts with poly as well?

You should; there's only one that's something like $25 or so.

You Should install the mount at the same time. I did engine, trans and torque arm mount all at once..... The car felt tight and new again...

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I'm running into the same issue. Did you replace motor & trans mounts, if so did that fix the problem?
