Default frustrated w/ exhaust help!

i recently put on a set of kooks, catted y and magnaflow muffler. first when i put the kooks on i was using their ORY pipe and the flowmaster that was on it. it sounded like **** (as you could have guessed) and smelt bad so i bought a magnaflow muffler and two spun cats. installed the cats and muffler. sounds better now but im still getting a smell. i retorqued the header bolts today and made sure non of my clamps were leaking. the bolts werent loose and no leaky clamps. looked around for a while for a soot trail but couldnt see anything. i only smell the exhaust when im driving so im thinking its comming from under the hood. if i use the a/c w/ the windows up i smell it as well. im thinking there is a crack somewhere but i cant see anything and it gets hot fast. at idle and reving it in nutral i cant smell or hear anything. when im driving i can smell it like i said and it sounds like a pick up truck w/ a cracked exhaust manifold. like a rushing air sound not so much clicking. im at a loss and would hate to take the headers out to inspect. anyone have any tips in finding the leak? i cant take the smell any more. also i forgot to mention im using the multilayer percy gaskets (new) so i dont believe that to be the problem.

thanks for any help,
corey

if its under the hood you should be able to pop the hood wack the throttle a couple times and hear it

What you should do is this. On the drivers side you will see deep down ( in engine bay ) a black box thing that is where the a/c and blower fan motor for heat and A/C is housed.
The headers are maybe 1/4 inch away from this plastic box.
One header pipe not sure what cylinder pipe it is but when it gets hot it can actually get hot enough to not melt the plastic but cause a smell. I put some self adhesive metal tape that is used to seal your houses heating duct work on the plastic A/C box to insulate it from any heat, you are basically insulating it from your header.
It fixed my smell it maybe the same problem you have.
Hope this helps.

hey thanks dude. ill try some of that. while we are on the subject. anyone have to divert the a/c condensation from dripping on the headers? mine does and wasnt sure if it will end up cracking the headers. prob not but something i was thinking about.

I don't think that "Metal" tape will prevent heat transfer. A piece of header wrap may do the trick though.

You put the tape on the plastic box to insulate it not the header.
