Waterpump differences?

Waterpump differences? Hi All,
I've got a swap going ('03 Corvette LS-1 into a '72 Maverick) and I'm not happy with the angle of the lower hose fitting on the waterpump. I'd like to swap to a 2004+ with the separate thermostat, but cannot find any for sale online. Mainly because I can get a cheaper "straight on" water outlet for it. S&P has a straight and 2 different swivel outlets for both style pumps, but they are pricey.
Bottom line, can the late style (separate) thermostat housing be retrofit to an early pump? I'm pretty handy with fabricating stuff...
