Will removing the air system clog high flow cats?

Default Will removing the air system clog high flow cats?

Hey all I want to delete the air system but I dont want to screw up my highflow cats. Ive talked to some people ( like 6LE) who say yes it will, and some who say no it wont.
A little help?

The point of the AIR system was to pump fresh oxygen at start up for emissions.

Also your cats were closer to the motor vs high flows which are further down stream.

I havent removed mine yet, BUT it hasnt been on for over a year, turned off. I just gotta remove that hunk of junk for some weight savings.

In theory it will wreck the cats eventually. On startup during enrichment mode, there is excessive fuel being put through the system. The is pumped in at start up as a way of preserving your cats.

There are stories either way of both doing no harm and wrecking the cats, but I think it more comes down to the tune at startup.

So, what prevents the cat failure w/ engines w/o AIR???
OEM specs are such that the emission system has to last 100,000 mi.[No different requirement for engines w/ without.]

maybe my story doesn't relate too much but when I had my 90 Camaro RS, after installing headers I didn't install the AIR diverter valve pipe to the smog pump well enough and had a bad leak, killed the cat within a few months, but it was a 3 way cat with AIR.

The AIR system injects fresh air into the exhaust stream, this causes the exhaust to become lean and very hot. This is needed for cats to warm up quickly for emissions reasons. If the cats are allowed to stay cool under cold start ups, then the excess cold start enrichment will eventually plug the cats. Cats without an AIR system will fail sooner then cats with an AIR system.

Can I ask why you want to keep the cats and remove the AIR system? They go hand in hand, I would just remove the cats as well. Or if you need them for "smog", then I would leave the AIR system on.

Ya think Im just going to keep it on. Hard to clean the engine bay up around those though. Oh well.

I've got hi-flows, and no AIR - no problems.

Not saying it's never going to happen, but it's all good so far

It hasn't been that long. 1 year, maybe 5k miles.

Will it shorten the life span, probably. Will it be significantly? We'll find out.

The bottom line is, imo, it sounds way better with cats, and looks way nicer without air.

Right, wrong or indifferent, it's the way I chose to go.

I have Dynatech high flow cats and removed AIR system on my car. Only got 500 miles or so with the combo, so I will be watching out for any sign of cat clogging. Car definitely sounds better than it did with the ORY and the raw exhaust stench was just killing me.......
