Default How to Identify an LS1?

I have the opportunity to purchase and LS1 that was pulled from a 2002 Ram Air TA. Is there a way I can be assured that the motor is what they are telling me it is? Numbers, stamps, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I know some of the head castings that could identify it, but I do not remember the numbers on the block.

853 are my head castings, for 98-2000 I believe heads. I think you have either 241 or 243s. One of those numbers are the stock heads, the other set are ls6 heads. Intake mani could help you, all though all ls motors look similar. Is it coming with exhaust manifolds? 2002 wont have EGR provisions on the exhaust manifolds, or the pipe that leads to the top of the Intake mani, sitting right above the throttle body. Hopefully someone can chime in on the casting numbers for the block. Do you have pictures?

Block casting numbers are on the rear driver's side of the block. 12561168 is the number for the LS6 block. (Sometimes used in LS1 cars). Not sure bout the LS1. I think there are a few different ones.

Other than checking all of the casting numbers of the block and heads to verify for sure..

A few tell's would be a Alum Block with a 5.7L casted into it.. there were no other Gen III/IV engines in "5.7L" casting.

The Intake would be another one. No EGR hole on the top of the intake.. so it is a later intake 2001+ and would normally be a LS6 inake.

The front Accessories and Engine frame stands appear to be F-Body as is the Clutch Master cycl looks like a F-body one.

Cast Exhaust Manifold that exit the rear area would look like late model F-Body ones (not truck or Vette). But on my 99 LS1 the driver side cat was a lot closer to the manifold. so.. I think someone else would have to verify that the 2001-2 were farther away from the exhaust manifold, but I would say that the owner mod'd the Pipe and cats.. (looking at the Cut and Welds on the exhaust header pipes).

Just a guess, but It looks like a 2001-2 LS1 from a F-Body.. but I could be wrong and you better check everything yourself.. hope this helps some.

Good luck.

It looks like it is an 01 or 02 block. Now wheather it is an LS6 block you need to look in the back for the S/N that was posted earlier. But if i had to guess it is not an LS6 block.

What size FAST intake is that?

Clean that bad dog up and your good to go

Well, now that I know its more than likely an LS1 would $3900 be a good buy for this LS1 + accessories. Should I go for one with lower mileage or Shoot for an LS2? Maybe I can get him down to 3k...better deal?

Here's the Specs:

85,000 miles
6spd
Factory wiring harness with computor
After market wiring harness (painless pt # 60508)

Alt, power steering pump, rack ,air condition compressor,
after market intake
headers

Considering the T-56 and the FAST intake, the price seems pretty good. Try lower though, always worth a shot.

I picked up my 99 LS1/T56 with everything for $3500 two years ago.. but from what I have seen on Craigslist.. that is not a bad price (providing the engine is a good runner). so..anything you can get below that asking price, I'd say, go 4 it.!

that harness is prolly worth over $500 IIRC, plus if it's the ls6 intake you can sell that too

sounds like a decent deal to me

Shook his hand today...$3400...I think I did pretty well. The FAST Intake is p/n 54001 and the headers Hooker p/n 2077.
