Default beat up valve stems...?

I am posting a question for my engine builder. He is currently working on a set of 98 ls1 heads that he got from a shop working on the car. the shop said the guy bought a cam and installed it and the new springs and brought the car to them because he was having trouble with it... (unsure what kind of trouble) The heads are now dissasembled and were checked for coil bind and retainers hitting, everything seemed fine, BUT, the tops of the valves are all scarred and beat up pretty bad. where the rockers touch. We are assuming he is running stock rockers and we do not know cam specs. they are lost. Any ideas as to what would be causing this.
we are both pretty new to the lsx design and are not sure what is required as far as upgrading the lsx valvetrain such as when adjustable rockers come into play and what not.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Since he is new to the LSx stuff, let him know that with the non-adjustable rockers, the stem protrusion is supposed to be at 2.00" I believe with a couple thou tolerance.

What springs are they having "trouble" with?
