looking for an LS1 to build
Hey whats up guys, I have a 1968 Camaro that's all restored, looks good but needs that extra something. Im looking to do a built LS1 with a Tremec TKO 600 5 speed over the winter. Where is a good place to find an ls1 block? I have been checking ebay but have only found junk, such things as blocks out of totaled WS6's, vettes and camaros. these have been priced well but with cracks all over the block in Vidal places im not sure they are going to stand up to the test of time. I only need a block b/c im keeping with the carburetor thing and I want to do a stroker something like a 408 or 427. Im new to the fourms here and just want to see whats what.
If you are looking at doing a 408 or 427 you definitely don't want an LS1 block. As stated above the iron 6.0 is used for the 408. The 427 would be quite a bit more expensive and can be achieved several different ways. Check out Scoggin Dickey(sdpc2000.com), they have bare blocks and assembled shorts for reasonable prices. And it will give you an idea of which blocks are used for each setup.
Go aluminum... I know the lq4 and lq9 blocks are beasts... but Id probably check out places like www.texas-speed.com and other things like that to get a feel for prices on blocks/shortblocks/longblocks. And to make an LS1 block into a 427 you'd without a doubt have to re-sleeve it, and as stated above its not worth it. A well built N/A 400+ Ci LSx motor will definatly bring a smile to your face.
