Default Will this cam require flycutting?

I was all set on going with a g5x3 on a 114 for my cam choice. Unfortunately I was unable to find one for my price range for a while and put it to the back of my mind. A member offered me a similar cam at a great price so I picked it up. The cam is a Comp Cam XE-R lobe 238/244 .605/.612 114+2. Knowing that the g5x3 was right on the edge of needing flycutting, with this one being a little larger will this require me to flycut on a stock internal ls1? Thanks a lot for the help.

My local shop advises against flycutting. Now I know why. They just pulled a new Vette in that now needs a complete longblock as a result of cracked pistons from being flycut. It damaged the block and heads.

Redlinez- That sucks about that vette. Thats actually the first Ive heard of a piston fragging due to flycutting. The flycut must have been awfully deep or something went wrong to do that.

JPH- Thats what I was hoping to hear. Thanks a lot

More input is welcome. I know there are some cam experts out there.

Apparently it isn't too rare and the very reason they advise against doing it. But hey, I don't do these things for a living, so I only know what I read and hear. I trust them though. Quite a few guys put together stuff that is on the ragged edge with concern to PTV.

I'm not a big fan of flycutting, but I've never seen it to be a problem unless the flycut wasn't done properly.

Sounds to me like someone set the feed speed too high when cutting. Or didn't lubricate while cutting. In other words, they probably cracked the piston when machining it.

Thanks for the info. Im not to sure how to interpret it other than the g5x3 is close when it comes to clearing.

I just meant how to relate those clearance levels to the increase in the cam specs. I know a few things influence clearance. For example the x3 on a 112 is supposed to come close or need flycutting while the 114 is supposed to clear. Im just not sure how to put together all the measurements to tell if it will clear or not.

It would be wise to state what head you are running, if it is milled or not and if so how much was milled off and the head gasket thickness. Without those it is hard to give an answer on whether to flycut.

But even so it is best to measure yourself to be safe.

Awesome. Im glad that this should fit and I dont have to worry about flycutting (especially after hearing about pistons fragging from it). Im still going to double check when I get it in, but its nice to not have to worry as much
