Pushrods too long cause backfire out of valve?

I have been chasing an extremely loud ticking sound coming from my motor after a head swap. I am beginning to think my pushrods are still too long causing the intake valve to not fully close when at TDC. Anyone ever had a loud ticking sound when running pushrods that are too long?

If they were to long the car would not start because it wouldn't make compression. They could be to long to where they were making excessive valvetrain noise. I would start looking other places than the pushrods.

guessing is not good enough as with a non adjustbale rocker system as our cars have, the preload is determined by the pushrod length.

if you're unsure if the pushrod length is right, i'd fix that first, then if that doesnt fix the problem, move on.
