I know I have read it before on here but am having no luck finding it....
as far as the 4.8/5.3/6.0 GM truck engines go the quick way to tell them apart is they have a cast number in the block near the flywheel with trans removed
4.8 has a 48
5.3 has a 53
6.0 has a 60
Is this correct??

no
The obvious way to tell the 4.8 and 5.3 from the 6.0 is that the 6.0 will have "6.0" stamped on the block, both on the front and back. The 4.8 and 5.3 just say "4.8/5.3"
The only way I know of to tell the difference between a 4.8 and 5.3 is to pull a spark plug and stick a scope in. Flat top piston = 4.8, whereas 5.3 is dished.

Thanks,
I didn't actually mean the 8 digit casting#
I wasn't positive on the 4.8/5.3 but I thought the 6.0 had a big 6.0L and the 5.7 had a 5.7L cast on the rear near the edge of the flywheel
