Default Opinions on a stock cam setup

There was a thread floating around about a GTO putting down numbers in the 390-410 rwhp range with a stock cam and set of CNC'd 241 heads. I know this probably isn't typical but it got me thinking about how nice it would be to have that kind of power and not change the drivability at all.

My current goal is be to have a mid to high 7 sec car in the 1/8. I haven't run my current car since I bought it so I don't really have a baseline, but at the track the norm for a stock LS1 is 8.3-8.5.

I've got two questions:

1. For my goal (7.5-7.9 passes), do you think it would be worthwhile to upgrade the heads and keep the stock cam?

2. What heads do you think would give the most power given the cam?

I contacted a couple sponsors and it seems like the TFS As Cast 220cc are popular. They would be good if I decided to go with a larger cam, but I'm thinking they might be overkill. Let me know what you think.

that was probably an ls2 gto. I don't see an LS1 making that much power with a stock cam

I don't know why you would go to all the trouble to swap heads and not do the cam!!! There are alot of nice H/C set ups that are very streetable. here is a nice setup that won't set you back a ton of $. http://www.texas-speed.com/shop/item...d=680&catid=47

Definitley an LS1

https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamomet...stock-cam.html

I also thought something was off when I first saw it but after reading through I'm certain his car is what he says it is. I also searched and didn't see anyone else trying this so this is the only "heads only" car I could find on the boards.

I'm just trying to get opinion on whether I could get close to similar results or if his car is a freak, and if the 241s would be the best choice or could I get more for say a set of TFS heads.

I know I'm going against the grain and I'm not dead set on going this way just yet, I'm just trying to get some opinions. But if I could get 380+ rwhp and not have my drivability or gas milage change that seems VERY appealing to me.

I bought an 01 Z28 with H/C and I had to make it pass smog. I left the heads on, installed an 02 LS6 cam, and put the stock exhaust back on. I also put the stock stall back in. It passed smog with flying colors. I ended up putting a 12 bolt with 4.10's in it, man, it was a blast to drive. My best 1/4 mile time in that configuration was, 12.8@110. I never got a chance to run that comb with a stall though.

I'm thinking about doing heads with a small cam on my 00 SS. That is, if my girl upgrades hers and I can steal the ones she has on her car, LOL

A 224 cam is very well mannered for the street and won't affect your gas mileage on the highway. I've put about 27k miles on mine, installed it 9/07. Getting to 380rwhp with a 224 cam is doable with all the bolt ons.

You can't go wrong with a trick flow head. Personally I hope to get a set of TSP 5.3 stage 2.5's on my car this year:

I see you're in VA. Well, I just installed a set of West Coast 2.5 5.3L (63 cc) heads on my 99 C5 (FRC M6). I also installed a Blackwing air filter, LS6 intake, ported TB and LG longtubes. I'm getting it dyno tuned soon. I'll let you know how it goes. And yeah, I've still got the crappy stock cam.
