Default Crank gear question

I just pulled out my oil pump and am almost ready to install my new LS2 timing chain set I got from TSP. I've never done this before and I'm wondering how to take the crank gear off the crank. Do I use a puller? Rubber hammer?

If you feel confident you can tap it off with a rubber or plastic mallet, without hitting any of the journal's try that. Key words without hitting any of the journal's! I generally use a three jaw gear puller. You can probably rent one from your local parts store or buy one from sears or harborfreight pretty cheap.

I have larger puller that doesn't fit behind the teeth very well. What is it I need to look out for? Also is there a trick to putting the new one on?
