Default low end ls1 cam?

I got a 99 vette motor in a truck w/40" tires. Would a 5.3/6.0 truck cam give much better bottom end? I'm more interested in fuel efficiency from idle to about 2500 rpm. this vehicle is used on trails and some street but never high rpm type driving. the config is: stock 99 ls1 w/02 camaro code, nv4500 manual 1 ton truck tranny, dana 300 xfer case, 4.56 14 bolt, 40" mtr. thanks for any ideas.

I just got done building a truck similar to yours on 35's with that motor and helped out on another with 40's, so I know what you mean about low truck torque.

Two words: Custom grind.

Call up Comp, Lingenfelter or Texas-Speed and ask them to grind you something like this:
261/265 advertised duration, 208/212 @ .050", .554/.558" on a 112 LSA and 109 ICL. With good tuning it will idle smooth enough for a big truck like yours and make pretty solid low end torque to help turn those tires.

Actually my truck is a CJ7. ~4200 lbs. It's turning those tires that require the torque. I'm also considering a heavy flywheel.

please tell me about this cam, like why these numbers w/be best and how much does a cam like that cost? I assume hyd/roller right?

Well a cam ground like that is closer to factory than most of the aftermarket cams out there so it will focus it's power band where GM does...idle to ~5500 or so. Where this cam really could shine is making more cylinder pressure every where, especially down low compared to if you were to swap in a stock cam from say, an LQ9 or something. All of the factory truck cams are under .480" of lift so grinding a cam for almost a full .100" more than stock is where a good deal of that extra torque could come from.

Also, the valve events of this cam are aimed for 100% low end grunt and decent gas mileage when matched with mild compression ratios such as the stock 10:1 LS1's. Instead of bleeding off much of the compression like a bigger cam would, this cam will hold more of that in therefore helping to turn those 40's with less gas pedal usage.

The reason why I know a cam like this works is because I have one just like it in my own LS1 truck and it turns my 35's with ease (4L60E and 4.30's in Dana 44's).
