Anyone here purchased a burned longblock?
Anyone here purchased a burned longblock? I'm looking for a LQ4 shortblock to build and my local car-part has a complete longblock from 03 that had been in a fire. I am going carbed so I don't need any of the intake etc, and I'm going with a set of L92's so I don't need the heads. My main concern would a fire do any damage to the block/pistons etc?

Depends on how bad the fire was. When my old Z28 burnt, the fire really didn't engulf the engine compartment but it was hot enough to discolor the block. I am reusing that block in my Trans Am and haven't had a single issue. I had the machine shop clean it up and I shot some paint on it.

Most of them get water in the cylinders. If you catch it early enough it can be cleaned up, but if it stays too long the block will need to be bored over. They would have to just about be giving it away for me to take a chance on it.

For what it's worth, my motor sat for over a year before I bought it back from the guy I sold it to. I turned the motor over by hand using the balancer. The cylinder walls had a little surface rust on them but once it was turned over it cleaned them up.
