stock rockers
stock rockers did anyone read the article in the latest issue of GMHTP magazine about using stock rockers with cammed cars? it was saying they are really only good to .550 lift and anything above that , the stock style rockers will prematurely wear out the the valve guides and the valve tips themselves. whats everyones thoughts on this?
good info, thanks. yeah when i built my 383, i was told by several that the stock stamped rockers are fine so thats whats in there now. i just read the article and was thinking, damn i better look into this cause i dont want to be skimping out and have my AFR heads get junked up

I've got 87,000 miles on my stockers, although I did have Harland Sharpe upgrade them about 18 months ago. For some time I have been concerned about questionable reccomendations by GMHTP and Super Chevy. It's not every article, however it happens way too frequently. Some errors have really been bad.

anyone knows how much $ stockers are going for new? 
GMHTP mag puts out that little tech article and at the bottom it says by Trick Flow Specialties.Perhaps Trick Flow has a agenda since stock rockers shouldn't be used with their heads due to their different valve angle.A lot of very good LSX guys prefer the stock rocker on heads with stock geometry.
Bronze valve guides are not as forgiving as the regular stockers.
for a full set of stock LS1/6/2 rockers $202.72
harland sharp upgraded set normally run in the $3xx-4xx range.
Been a while since we have sold the stock 1/2/6 upgraded ones...normally we get alot of L92 or LS7 orders

I see a lot of rolled eyes here in this thread but how how many of you actually checked the wipe on the stockers? I did, it sucked and I swapped to a different rocker on my bronze valve guide installed Dart heads for that very reason. Yes it will run. No there will be not signs of issues until the valve guides are worn and need replacement. This is a bigger issue for aftermarket heads with bronze valve guides than stock or ported stock heads.

Bronze guides are softer and more susceptible to side load. I found the wipe pattern on the stock rockers with an aftermarket cam to have a wide wipe pattern. I tried to shim and correct but in the end the pattern remained wider than I felt comfortable with and on some rockers it wasn't centered front to back, i.e., the rocker was hitting on its edge. Upon inspection of my rockers and a few friends we saw similar wear patterns. This is OK with a stock setup, seat spring forces and open forces are relatively low so the side loads on hard guides in stock heads provide acceptable life. Now enter an aftermarket cam, with a smaller base circle. Rocker initial position is changed. Higher lift means longer wipe and higher spring loads results in higher guide side loads. I prefer an optimum wipe pattern to minimize guide wear and for that reason elected to go with an aftermarket rocker.
The stock units are a very good design that are very light, but in my opinion if improperly set (and I found I couldn't get them properly set) they will accelerate wear on an aftermarket bronze valve guide.
