Default 853 Heads

Just was wondering.. I picked up a set of 853 (I believe that's the casting) from a friend.. Will I be able to bolt these straight on to my 01 LS1.. I know some valve covers dont match up..

And can anybody give me the best approach to make these heads flow the best..??? (valve sizes, port pics, etc.)

I'm running 853s and they are center bolt, four bolts down the center of the head for the valve cover. Dunno if there are 853s that are perimeter bolt, but I do know both sets of 853s I have are center bolt. Port the **** out of them ******* and bolt em one.

BTW, my 853s have coil brackets, not individual coil mounts.

Never mind, I didn't read the post correctly. I was thinking 806's/1998 heads. Excuse my lack of reading

If you have an '01, then you have 241 casting heads. 241 heads flow better and the casting were marginally better than 853. Porting each levels the playing field, but I have heard of slight shifting in the 853 castings that will affect them even in ported form.

The 853's also require the graphite gaskets instead of the MLS due the the notch cut in the deck. I would keep the 241's.

Not all 853 heads require the graphite gasket. I burned a valve last season, so I had to pull a head. There was no notch, so it went back together with a new MLS gasket with 3 coats of copper spray. The other side still has a graphite gasket. I have not had any issues with pushing water on a 200+ shot.
