Default the mysterious ticking sound

well today i got around to swaping my heads and cam. i already had a custom ground comp cam, comp lifters, comp 7.400 pr and comp 918 springs and retainers. but once i got the heads off and started pulling lifters one didnt want to come out. so after having to use pliers to get out a lifter i originally planned on reusing i could see some damage to the cam. after getting the came out i noticed at least five bad lobes. 3 with like a round dipped shape and others had gashes. the one that didnt want to come out looked as if it was at an angle. i only had around 3-5k on this setup and it always made the ticking sound that everybody seems to have. one thing when i pulled the lifter trays out the lifters didnt come with the trays they just kind stayed where they were. hence my first question. is that normal? would pr legnth have someting to do with this? or is it the trays?

its normal for the lifters to stay in the block. If you didnt use a PR length checker then there is a good chance your ticking could have came from incorrect preload.

I can't see the lifter trays causing damage to the cam, unless the lifters were installed incorrectly somehow.

When you replace the cam use new lifters & lifter trays. Check for pushrod length and set the right preload. That should get you started in the right direction.
