Hot cam vs.. Tr 220 ????
#21
OK lets settle this, who does the tr220 or gm hotcam have the highest trap speed to date? NEITHER one of these cams are cutting edge. Lets compare power and relieability. I would have to believe the hotcam's duration would suit his nitrous application much better than the tr220.

I like my hotcam, havent had it a horribly long time but I like it a lot. I got an A4 not tuned yet but will be. Its drivable w/ a converter but kind of a PIA for now. I havent adjusted the idle or drilled the TB either though. I like the sound, one of the reasons I chose it, and its realiability on springs

"Angie's car has gone 10.81 @ 123.85 MPH with a TR220/112."
Man, that is STROLLIN' for a 346 ci hydraulic cam engine! Especially considering it's an itsy bitsy teeny weeny 220 cam!

It was the first time at the track w/ that combo. . .still untuned, but all of your other points are valid.
When all is said and done, I believe if I had a 3100lb raceweight, a custom wideband tune, and 15" bogarts all around, and of course a 12 bolt rear, I'd be in the running for the quickest cam only M6 car.

Very impressive shakedown to say the least.
Mike, any plans to experiment with different cams later on? If so, what? You sound like you have a pretty well dialed in car.

I got my hotcam kit for 200.00 from a local dealer that ordered it for a guy that put a 100.00 deposit on it and never picked it up, They said it would retail for 425.00. I know its not cutting edge, but the bang for the buck was awesome. How much would the TR 220 with springs cost me?

but it is just power to weight ratio combined with a kick *** convertor she has and low weight. if you put a hotcam in that car would you think it wouldnt run 10.99? i will admit the 220 TR cam is a superior cam power wise up in the top rpm but to say it is far superior, i just dont know.

I like my hotcam and so do my valve springs If I spent all my time in the high RPM ranges I would like the 220 better but I don't, and it sounds wicked thru a loudmouth, some headers and tuning and I'll be deaf and no 220 cammed car will will pull harder except on the dyno maybe.

Hey Snake Skinner, I have a 98 ws6 a4. Doing the home ported heads make a big difference in your set up. Also I was thinking of buying the hot cam kit is that a good decision also. Last question what about the 3.73 on a DD would the 3.42 make much a difference.

I have 4.10 gears in the stock rear. Not only was I leaving at low R's, but I had to back pedal it into 2nd to avoid wheel hop since my susp. is 99% stock
No plans to swap cams. . .I need to find a job first!

avezz28 asked the question of what was the highest trap speed of the 2 cams. He didn't ask about transmissions or weights. We never said that a TR220 will run that in any car you put it in but the fact remains that Angie turned almost 124 with a 220 cam in an A4.
If all you are concerned about when shopping for a cam is price and a rough idle then by all means get a hotcam. If you want a cam that will have better power throughout the entire powerband and have a smoother idle and better drivability then the TR220 or the TR224 is a better choice. Also as far as the TR220 being harder on springs, that may be true to some degree but it's not a huge issue. Angie still has the same Comp 941 springs that went on the car almost 3 years ago.

I think some people have the idea that you have to change springs every 6 months to a year with an aggressive lobe cam.

Seems to be that way. Everyone complained about the 941 springs breaking but we still have the same set on Angie's car. Granted the car doesn't have a ton of miles on them but they see severe duty 100% of the time.
