Question Do cams 'wear' any?

Just curious, how much wear & tear do cams experience? Anything to look for on used cams? Thanks a bunch.

FWIW, cams are on my list of "things not to buy used". Make absolutely sure you are getting the cam you're buying when buying a used stick. Just some things I'd rather buy brand new. That's just me, I guess.

LS1 Cams will show wear very soon after they are used, but it is mostly just costmetic...minor wear showing on the lobes from the roller lifters. As long as you know exactly what you are buying (ie, there is a part # stamped or etched in it), then its pretty safe to buy a used cam IMO.

You'll want to inspect the journals on the cam, although I havent seen any used cams that had much cam journal wear.

when I was in my import days (thank god I came to a realization) I had stock reground cams in my dohc zc crx... Stock reginds will wear a good bit due to the loss of structural integrity. But with new billit grinds the wear is very minimal to none. just my .02

I agree with the other guys...The fact that its used probably isnt bad. What could be bad is that it might not be what its advertised as...I'd degree it at least.

" This guy "goes through cams?!" You da man!"

Not that I go through cams I just have a stack of em in my garage from engines I have rebuilt and or blown up, I used to have a bad habit with shifting my cast bottom ended small blocks at 7000+. I also have a stack of heads, cranks, pistons, half pistons, rods, and two windowed blocks.
