Default Dropped Bolt in Oil Pan

Not good to say the least I was moving some stuff around in the engine bay and I had left one of the cam gear 10mm bolts laying in a bad place to say the least. Stupid mistake but all I head was the distinct thud of a bolt contacting my empty oil pan. Not sure if it fell in next to the oil pump or around the cam in a lifter hole.

Needless to say I'm pissed I've found it near impossible to remove this oil pan with the engine in the car. The BMR K-member allows nearly no room for the oil pan to drop at all.

Basically at this point I don't want to guess on how to get it off anyone have any directions on the easiest way to drop the pan entirely with the motor in car?

Try using a bendable pen magnet like the one pictured below. The same thing happened to me and the magnet did the trick. However, i dropped the oil pickup bolt. Good luck

Thanks for the quick response and your method worked perfectly. I was so overwhelmed about the potential disaster my dumb *** had just caused I was ignoring the easy solutions.

First swipe of the oil pan with the mag revealed nothing but the second low and behold out pops the bolt! Thank god sometimes you got to step away to find the easy solutions I was damn near about to start planning the engine removal!

Standby for my next f-up.

I did the same thing when I was doing my H/C/I Swap...I dropped one of the old cam bolts (Double Timing Chain came with new ones) down the valley, bounced off the camshaft, but never hit the oil pan. It ended up settling on top of the crank...I could have sworn I heard it hit the pan, so after about an hour of searching with a magnet, I gave up for a few hours. When I came back I bumped the engine by accident (was out of the car on the k-member) it rocked it enough to dislodge the bolt and it hit the oil pan right by the pump and I grabbed it with my fingers.

Lesson learned: Don't place bolts on the deck of a motor.
