the truth about oil pumps....
I had a friend of mine have his oil pump fail, so he just replaced it and did a cam swap while he was at it... IMO its for peace of mind, I spin my car to 6.8k and a ported oil pump is going to keep it lubed way better than a stocker! Oil starvation is what causes spun bearings, and thats the LAST thing I want! Besides might as well replace it while you are down there than later down the road IF it does fail!
at this point, i would swap the oil pump on any fbod ls1 engine that is all stock (if i had it apart that far). not because of mega rpm, but moreso because of age. i wouldn't change it just because. for what, $100...you can increase the odds that the most important part of the engine is performing as well as it possibly can.
that $100 investment can turn into a $2100 investment real quick should it decide to give up. if you're already there, do it right or don't do it at all.
with that being said, the ta will stay stock the rest of its life and i will only swap what is necessary. my other engine will get all new **** when it gets a facelift.

i think alot of people simply do it BECAUSE THEY ARE ALREADY IN THERE. This is the reason I did it. I figured if i was yanking the front cover for a cam, and the car had 100k on it, I might as well pay the little bit extra for the new pump. Its just a safety/peace of mind thing.
