Default Rebuilding an ls1

how much would it cost to rebuild a completly stock ls1 before and after labor is added up?

i just pulled my ls1 out of a camaro z28 i did all labor my self put 10.5:1 compression and a farley big cam and i payed around 2500 but thats eerything replaced new crank new everything plus 500 for comp reprogramm

To the OP, your probably looking at around $500 from the machine shop alone if you just do a bone stock rebuild with your stock pistons & rods, just new rings.

Now if you step up to a 347 & decided to get forged pistons & aftermarket rods your looking at about $600 for pistons & about $400-500 for rods. If you go this route I highly suggest ARP main studs. This is a GREAT bottom end upgrade but will add to your machining cost at the shop due to adding the studs. They will need to line hone the mains with the studs installed & torqued.

You might want a oil pump. I would on a full rebuild. Thats about $100-200 depending on what pump you buy & it should come with new o-ring for the pick up tube. Your also gonna want at least some LS7 lifters, so theres another $120ish or so. Then all new bearings which is about $200 give or take.

Theres actually alot of little nickle & dime stuff that really doesn't cost much by themselves, but when added together it can catch you off guard & cause you to break your budget if you have one set. I'd say to do it properly using your stock crank with upgraded pistons/rods with new rings/bearings, gaskets, ARP main studs, machining costs & small misc. parts you will want a $2500-3000 budget. Even if you end up not spending it all it's always better to make sure you have enough planned to spend then run outta money part way thru the build.

i would suggest a LS2 timing chain only a $30 direct fit upgrade. if you buy a new h2o pump you'll need a ls2 160 stat / housing. goodluck!

Well if you go his^^^ route you might as well do a TSP 346 short block.

LOL, I was right on the money. And thats assuming you dont need to replace any misc. sensors or other little annoying things that time takes a toll on.


And to anwser your question about TSP, here is a forged 347 short block direct from them without any additional options. You can see the options in the drop downs & then refresh the total price. Dont forget to add shipping.

Look at my posted reply to the OP about buying a short block. Yes, if you have the extra cash it's always nice to just order a brand new assembled short block but your definetly not gonna do it for the price you can do your own. But thats the beauty of freedom. Some people can afford to drop almost $4k for a short block & shipping. Others like myself might want/need to take about a year to piece together parts & get things assembled. It's alot easier for some of us to go the do it yourself route even if we drop $3k on a build cause it's not all comming out of the bank at once.

In the end it's all personal preference. I'd say if you have the time & means to do one yourself you can save some money. But if you dont wanna mess with it all & have cash, just buy a new one & wait for it to arrive. Either way your gonna reach the exact same goal of having a forged 347.
