crank bolt/pulley removal

ok i just skipped the rest of the thread (pissing match). what scared me is one of you guys said that the ls1howto is misleading on cam swaps an you guys kinda scared me. my buddy has done them several times and he's going to be helping me do mine which ive never done. can you guys give me any tips? i know about the 5/16 metal dowels for lifters and i just need tips on removal. what crank pulley should i get? why is there 25% ud pulleys now all of a sudden when everyone use to run 10% why don't anyone use dampner's? ill shut up now

His method would be OK if he put a couple of flat washers on the extension so that the bucking force was against the crank snout and NOT the first bolt thread. There's no right or wrong method as long as you don't put something in there that is going to put the bucking force against the threads instead of the crank snout. As far as LS1HowTo is concerned most of that stuff was compiled years ago. There are a few errors, but overall it contains some very helpful information for someone who is doing an LS series rebuild for the first time. Each individual must be able to know what to cull and use good stuff to their benefit.

With the cam installation, the biggest issues I have with ls1howto are the removal and installation of the harmonic damper (or pulley). The methods can lead to damage of the internal threads of the crank which is a major headache once done. Also, the installation of the GM bolt at the end is incorrect as well, there is no torque value but rather a rotation value. A search will turn up countless lessons learned on this part of the cam installation.

There are some using wooden dowels to hold up the lifters (I don't think ls1howto does it this way) and this can lead to broken wood in the motor and that is a mess to deal with.

Valve train geometry is also not covered.

I agree with eallanboggs that ls1howto is an excellent source of information and it took a lot of time to assemble and compile it all. You have to know where to deviate from what is there however and this is where some guys get messed up.
