Pics of the GF helping me take apart my 5.3.

Here is how it looked the day I bought the motor, stuffed into the back of the gf's durango lol. I was told the motor was making some noise, which is why it was pulled. I'm thinking it was a spun bearing prob as one rod cap was missing. Anyways, onto the pics!

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...k/SANY1623.jpg

Here are the pics as of yesterday.

Finally getting it onto the stand:
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...2009200411.jpg

Here I am removing the ex. manifold bolt. I had one break on me inside of the head :bang:. I'm going to try and get it out, but they are going to the machine shop anyways :D.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...2009200432.jpg

I asked the gf to go ahead and remove the other ex. manifold, and the water pump. She loved working with the ratchet lol. After she finished she wanted to take a pic of what she had taken off so far.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...2009200451.jpg

Now here are the good ones. Were finally inside the motor, and she's never seen anything like all this so it was kinda funny. (The old oil smelled like ass though)

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...2009200511.jpg

After that we started taking off the whole rocker arm assembly. After that was out of the way we could start getting ready to take the heads off.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...2009200521.jpg

Here is a pic of her wondering WTF this thing is lol.
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...2009200531.jpg

After she removed the timing chain and sprocket I told her to thread the water pump bolts into the cam. She had no idea why. I then told her to pull nice and easy.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...2009200541.jpg

Then she asked, "How long is this thing?"
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...2009200551.jpg

Well without to many issues it was finally out.
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...2009200561.jpg

That's all the pics I have, bc after that we flipped the motor over and started taking out rods and pistons. She now knows what makes her car go, or at least I told her. Oh well she said she had fun taking out the bolts lol.

I lmao when she tried to take off the balancer bolt . For those who dont know, the balancer bolt is a major PITA. Especially with hand tools, you guys got it lucky with the impacts.

As for parts, I have LS7 lifters, an oil pan, coil packs and brackets, and picking up my stall tomorrow.

Overall good times!

EDIT: Pics of the mustang now.

bjamick 07-21-2009 08:36 AM

Thanks for the comments guys. As for her age, yes we both look young for our age. She's 19 and I'm 21.

Ya she has been asking when were going to work on it again lol. I told her, well now I have to get all the parts to get it done. I have most of the parts, just gotta order all the gaskets, bearings, and piston rings. I will take pics of the car this weekend and add them to here.

DarkhorSe_SS 07-22-2009 12:09 AM

Sweet. GL on the fox build

Ur grl is a keeper!

Mumbles 07-22-2009 12:25 AM

I had my Fiance' help me drop the exhaust manifolds when I installed my LT's and again when I lowered the motor back onto the pedestals after installing poly motor mounts, but thats about the extent of her helping with the automobiles. I can say with confidence she has no desire to want to learn about the things that go on in the shop. And like others have said, I think I like it that way. LOL. Good luck with your build.

HitmanLS1 07-22-2009 12:54 AM

Good luck on your build my girl get's jealous of a LS1tech.com LMAO but she is starting to like it. She has already asked to make a pass n my car at the track.

eallanboggs 07-22-2009 07:46 AM

Did she actually pull that cam bare handed or was that photo posed? Pulling a cam is a tricky proposition and I wouldn't recommend a novice do it without gloves. Camshafts have a lot of very sharp edges and by the time you realize you've been cut it's too late. Best to wear gloves at least for a novice. By the way where did all that rust come from? The water pump looked good, but a lot of other parts were rust covered.

Well if hes from up here....everything gets covered in rust

bjamick 07-22-2009 08:44 AM

Ya guys she's a keeper. She did pull the cam out all by herself, and without gloves. No problems here, I think I may have cut myself once on the block.

She's been asking me if were still going to get the mustang this weekend. She said if I do that she's going to be helping me take it apart and clean it up.

I really want to throw a cam in there, but the money doesn't look to good for internal mods like that. Seeing as after pushrods, springs, seats, and gaskets I'm at like $600 :(. I would much rather put that into a nice rear end, or susp mods.

AutomagicLS1 07-22-2009 11:00 AM

Damn she is hot

I always had this same thought in the back of my mind. She loved my car before we got married, did that, then put her Nursing school AND now she's said "find the turbo you want and I'll take care of it". Hell-to-the-Yea!!!!!!!

forcd ind 07-23-2009 07:39 AM

I will be removing some junk tonight. Mostly all the under hood stuff. There are all kinds of wires in there.

PREDATOR-Z 07-27-2009 07:03 AM

I can't tell for sure, but is that a iron 5.3?
are you going to punch it to 5.7? That would make nice track motor if forged.

bjamick 07-27-2009 07:53 AM

It is an Iron 5.3, for now I was thinking of running the stock 5.3 stuff. I may punch it out to 3.898 so it can take the stock ls1 rods and pistons and I beilieve I could still run my 01 truck crank.

Can't make up my mind though, I dont know if going from 5.3 to 5.7 would make THAT big of a difference.
