Default Dairly Driver: 408?

Picked up a 1998 Trans am with 30,000 miles. Car was modified to race but I was planning on bringing it back to stock for a daily driver. Engine is a 408 with ported ls6 heads, ls6 intake, headers, and unknown cam. Engine had less than 1,000 miles on it and it was not tuned right and barely ran.

After pricing stock ls1 rebuilds, I'm considering pulling the 408 and having the bottom end gone through and sourcing a cam. I will either rerun the ported ls6 heads or put a set of stock ls6 heads that I have. I also want to go with a very mild cam that will allow me to daily drive the car with no issues.

So do you guys think I can get a 408 to drive like a stock car and get decent gas mileage or should I just pull the 408 and rebuild a stock bottom end? Also what cam can I run to keep the 408 mildly mannered?

I would recam the 408 and depending on the cc of the heads you might have to watch out for the compression ratio. With the right specs on the cam you can dd a 408 with no problems and still put down close to 500 rwhp pretty easy.

unless you want to trade your 408 for my stock LS1???????????????????
